UK : PHD Internships Bank of England

Overview

The Bank of England is the central bank for the United Kingdom. Its core purposes are to ensure monetary stability and to contribute to UK financial stability. In addition, it manages the UK’s foreign currency reserves, issues banknotes and acts as the bankers’ bank.

We are offering PhD internships for two to three months on projects that are relevant for monetary policy and financial stability. These positions are based both in the Financial Stability and Monetary Analysis areas of the Bank. On some projects, interns may be estimating on onsite-only datasets (see below) jointly with our staff. Timings of individual internships are flexible.

Salary

A daily rate of £100 per day and holiday entitlement pro rata based on 28 days per annum are offered. Overseas candidates will also receive a small accommodation allowance during their stay and be reimbursed for an economy class return flight to London.

Background

The Bank of England provides a unique environment in which economic analysis and research inform policy at the highest level. The Monetary Analysis area of the Bank is seeking applications from economists with a keen interest in monetary policy related issues. The Bank’s Financial Stability area conducts analytical work to identify and reduce threats to the stability of the financial system.

Skills and experience

Candidates should be expecting to submit their PhD thesis within the next two years.

All fields are considered, although we are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in:

  • monetary economics
  • open-economy macroeconomics and international finance
  • applied econometrics
  • macrofinance and asset pricing
  • financial economics, including banking theory/regulation and credit risk modelling
  • economics of payment systems and networks.

The Bank of England has access to many interesting datasets including real-time macroeconomic data, monetary data, data on international banking groups, interbank payments and bank balance sheets.
