Erasmus Mundus Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM)
The Erasmus Mundus Master in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management (CoMEM) is a two-year, English taught international Master’s programme, in which five high-rated European universities participate. As a student, you will familiarise yourself with the key issues involved in providing sustainable, environmentally friendly, legally and economically acceptable solutions to various problems in the CoMEM field.

During the programme, you will study at universities in three different countries. The participating students spend the first semester in Trondheim, Norway, the second in Delft, the Netherlands. During the second year, CoMEM students can either go to Barcelona (Spain), London (UK) or Southampton (UK) for the third semester. After that you will be doing your thesis work at one of the three universities you visited.

All participating universities have long-standing relations with private firms, public administrations and other research and education institutes, which as a student you will benefit from. Not only does studying in different European countries mean you will meet and work with professionals from various backgrounds and gather knowledge on a wide range of issues involved, you will also get a comprehensive EU perspective on CoMEM related issues. This will help you develop a coherent and integrated approach that is applicable to a more global perspective as well.

EU scholarships for 15-17 selected “third-country”graduate students will be available for CoMEM MSc in 2010-2012. Third country graduate students are nationals from a third-country other than those from EU member states, eea-EFTA states and candidate countries for accessionto the European Union.

Scholar programme

A limited number of scholarships are available for third-country scholars. A scholar is an academic and/or professional of outstanding experience who carries out teaching or research assignments and scholarly work within the framework of the CoMEM Erasmus Mundus Masters Course. Erasmus Mundus scholarships allow third-country scholars to perform a teaching or research assignment or other scholarly work of three months at the Masters consortium. The consortium decides who receives an Erasmus Mundus scholarship on the basis of two main criteria. The first criterion is to strengthen the educational and research profile of the major delivering third-country universities/countries of MSc students to the course. The second criterion is the scholar’s research and educational profile (minimum requirement MSc, preferably PhD and preferably coming from a faculty position).

Scholars have to apply for these scholarships directly to the Erasmus Mundus Masters consortium offering the Course. Eligible scholars should not be nationals and residents of EU Member States, EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and candidate countries (Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey).

All of these universities are internationally oriented and provide excellent student services regarding things such as housing, welfare, language courses and social integration. To be further specified. The participating universities all have noted educational experience and a proven research record in the field of CoMEM, as well as strong links with the industry.

Admission requirements MSc CoMEM Students

Admission requirements MSc Programme CoMEM

1. A university BSc degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or degree in a subject relevant to the CoMEM Programme. You have a thorough general knowledge on the fundamentals in engineering or numerate physical sciences and your degree represents a minimum of 180 ECTS.
   *Please note that if you are in the process of obtaining your Bachelor degree, you may apply for admission to CoMEM. You should include a letter from your university stating the anticipated date of completion of the degree. We may conditionally admit you, based on transcripts, detailed information about the curriculum and the expected date of graduation. The conditional admission letter will include the deadline date for obtaining your BSc degree.
2. A BSc Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 75 % of the scale maximum.
3. Proof of English language proficiency:
   TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 90 (internet-based test). Please note that we only accept the TOEFL internet based test
   or IELTS (academic version) Overall Band score of at least 6.5.
   or have passed The University of Cambridge ‘Certificate of Proficiency in English’ or the University of Cambridge ‘Certificate in Advanced English’
   TU Delft requires the test certificate to have ben issued within the past two years.* Please note that exclusively nationals from the USA, the English speaking part of Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand are exempted from the English language requirement.
   ** As the process of collecting information, registering for the test and receiving test results may take several months, we advise you to register for the language tests as early as September-December (the year before).
   *** Nationals of the People’s Republic of China, please note: you need a ‘NESO-Certificate’ to apply for TU Delft’s MSc programmes.
4. A clear and CoMEM relevant essay in English
   This essay (1000 – 2000 words) should cover the following aspects:
   • your academic and personal motivation to participate in the CoMEM MSc programme
   • which skills and abilities make you a good candidate for CoMEM
   • Give three examples of master thesis topics that interest you and explain this interest
   • Indicate your initial preferences for the semester 3 and semester 4 university of the CoMEM programme
5. A resume (curriculum vitae) in English

A dmission policy

• The admission policy is intended to ensure equal opportunities for qualified students from in and outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Students are therefore in general assessed individually on the basis of students’ previous academic record, together with exam results, personal statements, letters of recommendation and language skills. Therefore this course is intended for BSc graduates.

• A limited number of students with a few years of work experience, who will benefit from the course, will be considered to participate in the CoMEM programme. It is our opinion that such students can give the programme an added practical value.
• Applicants already in possession of a MSc degree will only be considered if suitable BSc applicants are unavailable.
• Upon receipt of the applications, the CoMEM Board will select a list of suitable candidates, based on the criteria, which have been set and agreed on by the partner universities.
• A limited number of scholarships is available for “third-country” students. Eligible students should have obtained a first higher education degree (BSc) and should not have carried out their main activity (studies, work etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or participating countries mentioned above (’12 month rule’ as in EU GUidelines).
• A main list of third country students to be recommended for scholarships will be compiled together with a reserve list. The recommendations will be submitted to the European Commission for confirmation.
• Applicants can apply to a maximum of 3 Erasmus Mundus programmes and are required to specify in their application whether they have applied to other E.M.courses.

* Please note that your application is only considered complete and will be reviewed when all documents, including TOEFL/IELTS test scores have been received by 1 November.

**Third country graduate student means a national of a third country other than those from EU Member States, EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).

***Please note that Third-country graduate students may subit a maximum of three applications for Erasmus Mundus Masters courses. In the case that a student applies to more than three Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses, this student will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Required hard copy application documents – CoMEM Programme

1. A certified copy of your original academic degree(s) in the original language
2. A certified translation of your academic degree(s) in English
3. A certified copy of original lists of grades/marks (transcripts) in the original language
4. A certified translation of grades/marks (transcripts) in English
5. An original report providing the TOEFL or IELTS score (academic version).
   The TOEFL organization will send the score directly to TU Delft, if you supply them with the university code 0031.
   * please apply early for the language tests; it may take a long time to register and for the test to be processed
   ** Nationals of P.R. of China: In order to obtain a NESO certificate you need to take the IELTS or TOEFL test. A neso certificate must be sent to TU Delft as proof of validity of qualifications.
6. Two letters of recommendation in English (one from an official of the faculty from which you obtained or soon will obtain your diploma and one from your employer or another official, e.g. the supervisor of your BSc thesis work)
7. An essay (1000 -2000 words) in English (for more information, see admission requirements)
8. A resume in English
9. A certified copy of your birth certificate
10. A photocopy of the pages of your passport that give your name, date of birth, place of birth and passport expiry date.
    *passport must be valid for at least 6 months after CoMEM graduation date
11. The online application will generate an overview of the application documents. Please include this overview with the hard copy documents
