Europe : Master Scholarship in Distributed Computing 2010 at The EMDC Programme

The Erasmus Mundus programme in Distributed Computing is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain. It is a two-year Master’s programme including compulsory mobilty for the students.

The EMDC programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.

Students from any country are welcome to apply. A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available.

There are excellent scholarship opportunities for students accepted to an Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme.

Scholarships

Who can apply for an Erasmus Mundus (EM) Master’s programme scholarship?

Only candidates who have applied to and have been accepted by an EM consortium* in accordance with its specific students’ application and selection criteria, are eligible for a scholarship.

Students can apply for an EM scholarship to the programme of their choice. However, students must not apply to more than three (3) Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes (in total) during this round of applications. Students applying to more than three programmes will be classed as ineligible.

Please note that students may not begin their studies in the country where they have acquired their most recent degree.

* Consortium = the group of universities offering the programme.

Two types of scholarships

Category A scholarships

can be awarded to masters students selected by the EM consortia who come from a country other than an EU/EEA/EU-applicant country* (for instance all non-European countries) and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

The category A scholarship includes:

  • Contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs: € 4000 for a one-year EMMCs; € 8000 for courses longer than one year
  • Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage) € 4000 / semester
  • Monthly allowance € 1000 / month

* countries other than the 27 EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), Switzerland and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – FYROM and Turkey.

Category B scholarships

can be awarded to any master’s students selected by an EM consortia and
who do not fulfil the Category A criteria defined above.

The category B scholarship includes:

  • Contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs: € 3000 – only if the EMMC includes a mobility period to a Third-Country partner
  • Maximum contribution to the EMMC participation costs (including insurance coverage) € 2000 / semester
  • Monthly allowance € 500 / month

How many scholarships are offered?

Each Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme has:

  • 7-10 scholarhips category A
  • 6-8 scholarships category B

Scholarship rules and requirements

  • Students must not apply to more than three (3) Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes (in total) during one round of applications. Students applying to more than three programmes will be classed as ineligible.
  • Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices.
  • Individuals who have already benefited from an EM master’s programme scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another master’s programme.
  • Students benefiting from an EM master’s scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
  • EM students scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the course editions.
  • EM master’s students will be awarded on behalf of the consortium a joint, double or multiple degree according to the description for the respective consortium and after fulfilling all academic requirements.

EM master’s students holding an Erasmus Mundus scholarship must:

  • Commit themselves to participate in the master’s programme in accordance with the terms defined by the consortium in the Student Agreement. Failure to do so could lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.
  • Spend their study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries. These two countries must be different from the country in which the scholarship holder has obtained his/her last university degree; the mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.

How can I apply for a scholarhip?

Students apply to the respective Erasmus Mundus consortia/programme.

Apply to EMDC

In order to apply to EMDC, you need to fill out an on-line application form and also send the required supporting documents, including one complementary Erasmus Mundus application form.

Deadline

Deadline for applying to the EMDC-programme: November 25th 2009

By that date, the online application form has to be submitted. Documents are accepted until December 1st 2009.
