Cardiff School of Chemistry
Cardiff School of Chemistry invites applications for a 3-year PhD Studentship, which is based in the School's Heterogeneous Catalysis Research Group and available immediately.
The project seeks to identify new catalysts for the synthesis of clean fuels, and is in collaboration with a leading UK company. The project will use supercritical fluids for the preparation of catalysts and will involve close collaboration with the University of Liverpool and industry. Candidate materials will be prepared using supercritical fluid precipitation methodology and their potential performance as catalysts evaluated. Catalysts will be characterised using a range of state-of-the-art solid state analytical techniques; including powder X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectroscopy, adsorption techniques, scanning electron microscopy, temperature programmed techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
You will work under the supervision of Professor Graham Hutchings (www.cardiff.ac.uk/chemy/contactsandpeople/academicstaff/hutchings.html), and would be joining a large well-established heterogeneous catalysis research group. The group is active in a number of exciting research areas and is recognised internationally for leading research. The research facilities are extensive and training in a broad range of techniques will be provided.
Funding and Eligibility: The studentship is open to UK, EU and international applicants and include tuition fees plus a maintenance stipend. For suitably-qualified UK/EU candidates, the stipend will be £12,600 p.a. For non-EU international candidates, an appropriate stipend will be negotiated with the School.
Applicants will possess, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours degree at upper second class (2i) level or above (or a qualification recognised by the University as equivalent to this) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely related subject.
How to Apply: Applications can be made online - for details of the application process, please see www.cardiff.ac.uk/postgraduate/pgapply
Please ensure that you include the project title for this studentship in the project title field of your online application.
