Job description

The PhD student will work in a project to be defined by the part-time professor. The project will be in the area of cargo transport & logistics with a regional focus. Issues that could be addressed are clustering of logistics activities and its impact on cargo transport, transportation mode selection processes, multimodal transportation and the impact of regional authorities on cargo flows. There will be close cooperation with the Province of Noord-Brabant.

Required education/skills:University Graduate

For the PhD candidate position, the applicant should have completed (or be close to completion of) a degree (preferably Master’s) in industrial engineering, econometrics, transport economics, logistics, or operations management, with a solid background in quantitative, statistical and/or econometric research methods. The candidate’s file should demonstrate evidence of the ability to interact with industry and/or policy makers, since this is a key part of the project. Candidates with an ability to speak and/or read Dutch are preferred, but all strong candidates without this ability are encouraged to apply.

The School of Industrial Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology has been given a grant to study regional cargo transport and logistics activities. The grant has been made available by the Province of Noord-Brabant. The grant funds a part-time chaired professor (0.2 fte) and a PhD candidate (full time funding for four years) who will work under the supervision of the part-time professor. The part-time professor is currently being recruited.

The School of Industrial Engineering is one of the longest-established IE Schools in Europe, with a strong presence in the international research and education community, especially in the field of Operations Management and Operations Research. OM and OR are at the core of the undergraduate IE program. The graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Operations Management & Logistics attract top-level students from all over the world to Eindhoven. Researchers in the School are member of the BETA Netherlands Research School in Operations Management & Logistics (http://fp.tm.tue.nl/beta/) and participate in industrial activities with members of the European Supply Chain Forum (http://escf.tm.tue.nl/).

Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 jaar
