UK : Overseas PhD Studentships University of Bath - School of Management

1. The University of Bath will be offering 10 Overseas Full-time Research Studentships starting with an intake in 2010/11, to commence study on 1 October 2010. These Scholarships will only be available to new doctoral students. Each Studentship will comprise three years of support, with each year of support including the full overseas fee (currently £10k), accommodation in University residences and provision of a training support grant (about £1k pa). Students will be expected to support their own maintenance costs (ie all living expenses).

2. The University of Bath will be offering 6 Overseas Full-time Research Studentships starting with an intake in 2010/11, to commence study on 1 October 2010. These Studentships will only be available to new doctoral students. UK : MDC Studentship University of Oxford

The Department of Clinical Neurology invites applications from postgraduate students, with good degrees (first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent), for a DPhil studentship funded by the muscular dystrophy campaign (MDC) to work in the laboratory of Professor David Beeson, at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.

This research project will study treatment and diagnostic approaches for autoimmune and inherited disorders affecting neuromuscular transmission. It aims to identify possible new target antigens at the neuromuscular junction and explore the potential of novel therapies based on RNA interference.

The Department has some 35 graduate students who are working in a variety of areas of neuroscience. These include Neuroimmunology, Neurogenetics, Neuroimaging (including MR Physics and Data Analysis), Ion Channel Pathophysiology, Vascular Pathology and Stroke. A number of departmental members are part of the Oxford Ion Channel Initiative (OXION).

Students are actively involved in a variety of programmes and seminars within Weatherall Institute and the Department of Clinical Neurology and more broadly with other University departments. There is a rich exposure to a wide variety of technologies, visiting speakers and the opportunity for travel to national and international meetings and workshops.

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.

As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

Obesity is a rapidly developing clinical problem. This project is designed to investigate physical interactions between fat cells and their extracellular matrix, as these may influence the storage of lipids in obese subjects. You will join a multidisciplinary team of physicians, physiologists and biophysicists and be involved in the development of novel techniques of nonlinear microscopy and microspectrometry. The project would be suitable for candidates with first degrees in either biological or physical science, as training in the other disciplines to be employed will be made available.

Funding Notes

The stipend will be £13,290 (based on full time). Tuition fees will be paid at the home rate. Candidates from countries outside the European Union will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and 'international student fees'. UK : The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarship

The University of Edinburgh will offer a Scholarship to a student from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2010-2011 academic session.

The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Economics and History. He was the first Tanzanian to study at a British University and only the second to gain a University degree outside Africa.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarship will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK. In 2010-2011 the tuition fees and living costs will be covered by the University of Edinburgh, while the return flights will be covered by the Tanzania Edinburgh Community Association.

The scholarship will be tenable for one academic year.

USA : Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Educational Grants US/Canada 2010-2011

For students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada, the MMMF (Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund) awards grants of approximetly $12,000 each; grants are not renewable. Every year, the MMMF also invite the recipients in Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

UK : Goldsmiths International Postgraduate Scholarship

There are up to 10 scholarships available to prospective international students studying for a full-time taught Master's programme . The scholarship provides a £5,000 fee waiver and is tenable for one year only.

To be eligible to apply you must have applied for a place on a full-time postgraduate taught degree, have an international fee liability and are self-financing to some extent. You will also need to demonstrate academic excellence and / or significant achievement in your chosen field of study.

UK : Overseas Scholarships in Music from City University London

The Department of Music at City University London announce a scholarship scheme (a total of four awards) for students beginning their postgraduate studies in Music in 2010-2011.

These scholarships are open to full-time overseas research students (UK/EU students are ineligible) who begin an MPhil-PhD in Music in 2010-2011. The award comprises a £4,000 contribution to overseas tuition fees, renewable for a further 2 years dependent on progress.

Overseas students who wish to study for an MMA-DMA degree (joint with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama) are eligible for an award of £2,000.

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Level of achievement at Undergraduate and Master's degrees
  • Markers of esteem such as prizes for outstanding work or a publication list, or major performance engagements
  • Research excellence or demonstrable research potential

UK : PhD Studentship Ethical Implications of ICT in Personal Health Monitoring, Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR)

Ethical Implications of ICT in Personal Health Monitoring

Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR)

CCSR undertakes research, consultancy and advice to individuals, communities, organisations and governments at local, national and international levels on the actual and potential impacts of computing and related technologies on society and its citizens. CCSR is a mature research group with its well-established Information Society Doctoral Programme (ISDP) with currently 25 research students and 23 research graduates.

CCSR holds two European FP7 grants; Ethical Issues of Emerging ICT Applications (ETICA) led by Professor B Stahl (CCSR Reader) and Personalised Health Monitoring: interdisciplinary research to analyse the relationship between ethics, law and psychosocial as well as medical sciences (PHM-Ethics) led by Professor S Rogerson (Director of CCSR).

ETICA identifies the potential ethical issues surrounding emerging ICT within a 10-15 year future window, whilst PHM-Ethics is situated at the development phase of new ICT applications to assess their ethical, legal and psychosocial consequences. There is a valued added opportunity for research, funded through this student bursary, to be undertaken between the ETICA and PHM-Ethics projects. The research will draw upon the forecasts from ETICA and the taxonomy instruments of PHM-Ethics to investigate the ethical implications and social impact of continuing to use advancing ICT in individual health monitoring scenarios.

This research will be done at a national rather than European level with empirical investigations being undertaken both at General Practices and Hospital Trusts. The outcome will be an empirically grounded ethical analysis of the impact of ICT on personal health monitoring within the UK. It will provide valuable input into future health policy and act as a platform for future grant application in the area of health informatics.

The supervisory team will comprise Dr N Ben Fairweather, Senior Research Fellow, who has undertaken published research on electronic patient records, Dr M Shaw, CCSR Research Associate who is a medical Consultant in public health and Dr N K McBride, Reader who has undertaken published research in NHS information systems. This research is multidisciplinary, focuses on one of the university’s overall research themes and has the potential to involve the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences either on this project or on spin-off future grant proposals.

The manchester Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Research Group (mIMP), Manchester Business School, is looking to recruit two research assistants to work with Professor Peter Naudé, Professor Stephan Henneberg and Professor Paul Cousins.

They will register on our full-time PhD Business and Management programme which has been ranked No. 1 in the world for the last two years (Financial Times 2008, 2009). They will be offered a robust, systematic and flexible research training and have access to dedicated resources and facilities.

The post holders will also work with their supervisors on a number of different research projects, one of which will form the basis of their PhD thesis.

Research topics cover different aspects of business marketing. One of the research assistants is expected to work on a combined business marketing and supply chain management topic.

UK : PhD Studentship Stem cell patterns in malignancy

Applications for this project are invited from graduates with experience and interest in a Relevant Biological Science with a first class honours degree or an upper second class honours degree with a masters degree in a relevant discipline. The student will be based at the School’s Whitechapel Campus in London.

The project: Most of the proliferative cells within a malignant lesion are capable of limited growth but, as for normal tissues, only a sub-population of proliferative cells is capable of indefinite growth. These are the “cancer stem cells” (CSCs) and this fraction of cells is responsible for driving the growth and spread of malignancies. Such cells have now been identified in a wide range of tumour types and there is increasing evidence that it may be essential to target CSCs if therapy is to be successful. It has been shown for several types of tumours that stem cells have greater resistance than the bulk of tumour cells to killing by radio- and chemo-therapies, and that therapeutic agents may appear to be clinically effective without actually destroying the CSC population responsible for tumour regeneration. The aims of the project are to determine how CSC properties of individual tumours are predictive of in vivo behaviour and clinical outcomes, and to develop information of therapeutic value for targeting CSC maintenance signaling pathways.

The studentship: This studentship will provide UK/EU home fees and a minimum stipend of £15510.00 per annum for 3 years. This studentship is available immediately and the start date would be as soon as practicable.

Non EU nationals are eligible to apply for this studentship but would need to fund the difference between home and overseas tuition fees themselves, approximately £8000.00 per annum for a minimum period of three years.

However, there remains a general requirement for new positive and negative electrode materials to facilitate production of the next generation of these energy storage devicesThe present project propose to employ electrochemical processes, with minimum environmental impact, to improve battery life by utilising as electrode materials metallic alloys to which constituents are added to impart an amorphous structure to the metallic electrode materials.

Objectives:

  • To employ economically viable and environmentally acceptable process to produce more active and cost effective electrode materials based on Pd-M alloys (M = Co, Ni, Sn and Fe).
  • To optimise the properties of the alloys (binary and tertiary). This will be achieved through optimisation of the system parameters and the electrocatalytic performance of the electrode/electrolyte interface of the battery system.

We are looking for highly motivated candidate with a good honours degree (minimum 2.1) or Masters in Electrochemistry/Chemistry or related discipline, who will have good analytical skills and strong interest in some of the following areas: electrolytes properties, electrode kinetics, electrochemical systems and processes, metallic coatings and their properties. Overview

The Bank of England is the central bank for the United Kingdom. Its core purposes are to ensure monetary stability and to contribute to UK financial stability. In addition, it manages the UK’s foreign currency reserves, issues banknotes and acts as the bankers’ bank.

We are offering PhD internships for two to three months on projects that are relevant for monetary policy and financial stability. These positions are based both in the Financial Stability and Monetary Analysis areas of the Bank. Despite considerable theoretical and empirical evidence that questions their validity, psychological stage models of dying and bereavement have dominated understandings of organizational change since the early 1980s. As discourses of loss in Western societies move towards continuing bonds, cultures of nostalgia and an obsession with memory and history, we can expect to see changes in the ways that reactions to organizational closures, mergers and acquisitions, are expressed and managed. This studentship will provide empirical evidence to enhance our understanding of the commemorative and memorializing practices used to remember deceased organizations in post-industrial societies and consider the role of grief as a resource for collective identity and memory formation. It will consider the dynamics of time and place in remembering through exploring the role of physical remains, such as heritage sites, monuments or disused buildings, in providing a focus for mourning. Through analysis of how dead organizations and their members are remembered, the studentship will enable understanding of changes and continuities in organizational loss and change in late modern society. The project will employ a range of qualitative methods potentially including documentary, historical and visual analysis and life history interviews.

You will be based in the Department of Management at University of Exeter Business School which has a vibrant postgraduate research community comprising over 120 doctoral students. To apply, you should have a first degree, minimum 2:1 or first class honours in a relevant discipline (e.g. Business and Management, Geography, Sociology, History) and a Masters degree in a relevant subject. Project Title: Nanostructured block copolymers for deterrence of fouling organisms.

Project Description:

This PhD project is part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network SEACOAT, in which 6 leading Universities and 2 companies are collaborating to understand biointerfacial processes involved in marine biofouling. The network involves research in 3 complementary, interdisciplinary themes: Surface Engineering, Surface Analytics and Bioadhesion (see http://www.biosciences.bham.ac.uk/SEACOAT for more information). The successful applicant will be appointed for 3 years to a salaried staff position as a Training Fellow, and will receive a salary with social security benefits, mobility and yearly travel allowances and a career exploratory allowance. The training fellow will be based primarily at International Paint Ltd in Felling, UK. However, the fellow is also required to undertake secondments and visits to other Partners (SuSos AG, ETH Zurich, Birmingham and Newcastle) to learn and apply specific techniques.

The project involves the design, synthesis and characterisation of novel block copolymers. Advanced synthetic techniques will be used to prepare the polymers to enable the control of physico-chemical properties. Polymer characterisation at International Paint and at other partners will investigate the polymer surface and bulk properties and how these affect the deterrence of fouling.

Funding Notes:

Switzerland : 2 PhD positions in Soil Chemistry/Isotope Geochemistry at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions based jointly in the Soil Chemistry Group (Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar) and the Isotope Geochemistry Group (Prof. Bernard Bourdon) at ETH Zurich. The research topic will be the development of stable mercury (Hg) isotopes as novel tracers for biogeochemical Hg cycling in soil environments. Mercury is an important pollutant element and Hg isotope ratios provide a promising new tool to trace Hg sources and transformations in natural ecosystems. One PhD project will focus mainly on the investigation of field samples, whereas the other PhD project is dedicated to perform laboratory based experiments. Both project parts will be strongly linked and use the state-of-the-art facilities of the Soil Chemistry and Isotope Geochemistry laboratories at ETH Zurich.

We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong interest to perform interdisciplinary research at the interface of soil chemistry and isotope geochemistry. Previous experience in these fields and/or analytical chemistry would be beneficial. Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in geosciences, environmental sciences, chemistry, geoecology, or a related discipline. Good knowledge of English is essential. Cranfield University has an exciting MRes/MPhil opportunity for a motivated graduate to undertake research that investigates new processes and technologies in precision engineering for the fabrication of bio-medical devices (lab-on-a-chip devices and bio-impedance probes).

This MRes/MPhil opportunity aims to investigate the use of microreplication technologies for the fabrication of very challenging bio-medical polymer products/parts. The project will involve conceptual design, design for manufacture and metrology, moulds manufacturing using state of the art ultra precision and micro fabrication facilities, polymer parts manufacturing using micro-injection moulding facilities. Additional tasks may include modelling and simulation.

The successful candidate will be required to become familiar with the relevant regulatory issues covering the bio-medical devices under development. They will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will be provided with any required training.

Title: Implementation concepts for integration of UAS communications into UK ATC Network

Applications are invited from holders of 1st class undergraduate or MSc postgraduate degrees in subjects such as Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Computer Science, who are seeking to undertake a three and a half years research project leading to the award of PhD.

The successful candidate will work on concepts for the integration of Unmanned Autonomous Systems into the UK ATC network in general and the integration of speech communication and recognition technologies within a real time UAV mission planning framework.

The studentship is supported by EPSRC; the stipend attached to this studentship is negotiable. In addition university fees are covered by EPSRC. Additional finance is available to provide equipment, consumables and travel costs. Applicants must hold a UK passport or have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period preceding the date of the application for the studentship. UK : [UK] Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) 2010 Oxford Internet Institute

We are delighted to announce that the eighth Oxford Internet Institute (OII) Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) will be held in Oxford from 5-16 July 2010.

Academic programme

The aim of the programme is to bring together advanced doctoral students engaged in dissertation research relating to the Internet and other ICTs. By sharing their work and learning from leading academics in the field, students can enhance the quality and significance of their thesis research and create a peer network of excellent young researchers.

The 2010 Summer Doctoral Programme will draw substantially upon the OII’s research strengths and will involve participation from many of our faculty, together with colleagues from other partner institutions. It will emphasise methodological innovation and good practice in research design, and will expose students to the benefits of discussing their research in a multi-disciplinary teaching environment.

The well-established format of the SDP course structure will be continued with daily research seminars and discussions led by an international group of leading researchers. All students will be asked to present their research to their peers in informal seminars. The programme will facilitate deep discussion of both substantive and methodological research issues, and help students frame their research questions and direct their research. It will also seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds on issues relating to the OII’s broad research themes with a view to identifying topics for future collaborative research.

Research areas

We welcome applications from advanced doctoral students in any discipline whose work in the field of Internet research engages with the OII’s research priorities of Everyday life, Governance and democracy, Science and Learning and Shaping the Internet. Reflecting the disciplinary base of the OII, most of the seminars will draw on Internet-related research in the social sciences, but some may also cover aspects of the department’s projects in the humanities and computer science.

Fees and scholarships

The course cost of £1550 covers accommodation at Lady Margaret Hall from 4-16 July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Travel to and from Oxford is not included in this fee. Lunch will be provided on week days at the OII, and several dinners and social events are also included.

We are currently looking for additional funding to provide support for student scholarships. Further information will be made available as such support is confirmed. Please note that students do not need to make a request for a scholarship at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed.

How to apply

Up to 27 places are available and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate who have embarked on writing their thesis. All teaching will be in English, so all applicants should be able to demonstrate their competence in this language.

All student applications must be supported by one or more of the students’ current doctoral programme advisors or dissertation supervisors. References will be requested for all students who are offered a place on the programme. Similarly, students should be able to clearly explain how their doctoral studies will benefit from the programme.

Singapore : The NTU Apec Scholarship for Full-Time MBA Programme

This scholarship is open to nationals of the following APEC member economies to pursue a full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at NTU:

Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States, Vietnam.

Eligibility criteria

  • Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are not eligible to apply
  • A good bachelor’s degree
  • At least two years of management or professional experience
  • Proficiency in the English Language
  • An acceptable score in the Graduate Management Admission Test [GMAT]
  • You should not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary or top-up allowance during the prescribed period of the award

Bond

There is no bond attached to the scholarship. No deferment of scholarship awarded will be allowed. Awards that are not taken up will be given to other qualified candidates.

Coverage

  • Each scholarship is tenable for 4 trimesters (≈ 16 months) only
  • Each scholarship shall cover the following:
    • Monthly stipend of S$1,400.00
    • Book allowance of S$500.00
    • Tuition fee, health insurance, examination fee and other approved fees, allowances and expenses
    • Cost of one overseas Business Study Mission (for MBA candidates only) undertaken within the tenable period of the scholarship

Singapore : Nanyang Fellows Programme, Nanyang Business School

The Nanyang Fellows Programme was launched in 1998 by Dr Tony Tan. Since then courses are conducted annually with an optimum cohort of around 20-30 students. The small size enhances learning and interaction on a personal level.

Fees & Period of Study

The tuition fee for the programme is S$68,000/- (Sixty-Eight Thousand Singapore Dollars) and covers the academic year from July of the current year to June of the following year(see the academic calendar).

The tuition fee covers the tuition at NBS-NTU, MIT Sloan and Wharton; one Overseas Business Studies Mission (airfare, transportation, accommodation and limited meals), computer fees and examination fees. The fee is payable in one lump sum upon successful registration.

The fee does not include the cost of airfare (country of origin to Singapore; Singapore to homeland; Singapore to USA), transportation and accommodation in Singapore and USA.

An enrolment fee of S$1000/- (One Thousand Singapore Dollars) is payable upon acceptance of the offer of admission. The enrolment fee is non-refundable but is deductible against the tuition fee upon successful registration.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

We offer attractive scholarships on a competitive basis to outstanding international candidates of exceptional ability and sterling track record. The scholarship provides each scholar with full or partial tuition fee waiver.

Financial aid is awarded to successful scholarship applicants in financial need, with a modest monthly stipend, air passage(s) and/or overseas accommodation. The specific value and coverage may vary.

There is no bond or obligation for the scholar to be employed by NTU or in Singapore. You may apply for a scholarship and financial aid concurrently with your application.
